Speaking as a former pro, it can be done. XP isn't as persnickity as Vista about hardware changes. If you are building the system yourself you need to make sure the motherboard has the proper hard drive connector. Older drives used a 40 pin IDE cable and new systems use a 7 pin SATA connection. With the price of hard drives and the increase in speed I would recommend copying the data over to a newer faster drive and keeping the older drive as a backup.
