I got my letter for music (primarily band, but I was also the lead male vocalist my senior year). Our letters had little musical notes on them in the middle of the "C". There were varsity letters for other activities beyond sports as well. I had the option of putting it on a jacket as did everyone else; I just didn't bother, and neither did a LOT of my classmates, footballers included.
I was only a sub on the golf team so I didn't letter in that.
Any similarity of high school to any other social grouping, be it the SCA or Washington DC or anything else, is entirely coincidental; that's our story and we're sticking to it. (And God said: "Riiiiiiiiight.")
