I wasn't able to open the graphic file (which is probably a failure of my computer, not your file - I'll try it on our office one tomorrow)...but I have a question.
You've probably guessed this is not for me (and not for a Caiden, though it may visit here from time to time), and in AE it is common for heraldic tabards to have a yellow border. I realise that isn't part of the badge, but it is local custom, at least there (to be honest I've never paid attention anywhere else, it's been years since I was at any war other than Pennsic).
The intent was indeed to have a wide yellow border at the (calf-length) hem and on the (forearm-length) sleeves, with the entire garment lined in yellow as well (it will be worn over a red and yellow gambeson and if he gets dye from the black linen on that gamebeson he'll have to deal with me, who spent upwards of 60 hours quilting and appliquing the gambeson).
I'm not sure I see what the difference would be as to whether he went out on the field in his black and yellow (such as described above) surcoat with a black tabard (of the ordinary type) over it, as opposed to just having the badge sewn onto the garment itself. From ten feet away you aren't going to be able to tell unless there's a stiff wind (same bolt of black linen)....this way I'm not adding another two layers to what he's wearing on the field in August heat.
