Pentathlon
Pentathlon was today (well, yesterday as of this posting) and I had a blast. It was the first time I'd ever entered an A&S competition in the SCA, and the first time I'd judged one. I was flung headfirst into the experience, judging in five categories. Two of them were composition (poetry and prose) and were thus read, discussed and adjudicated before the event. I judged the three heraldic categories today, and got to see some breathtakingly remarkable entries, including a magnificent reproduction of the same roll of arms I mentioned two posts ago, the Zurich Roll, using SCA heraldry. The attention to detail and the amount of preparatory research were impeccable, and it was a sheer delight to have been able to review the piece.
I've got a new idea percolating now to reproduce the described artifacts and actions described in Rene of Anjou's Tournament Book. More on this later.

I wouldn't mind trying a heraldic project, probably an illumination though. I have no heraldic skillz watsoeverz. :( Herald fail.

Now what I'd like to research is whether calligrams were used for the "heraldic" banners of period Persia, the ones that usually said "Allah is Great" or some similar phrase, and may or may not have extra bits around them. If they did, I'd love to see a larger version with a longer phrase as a field banner for you. :)
