cormac: headshot of me, with a subliminal message (Pooh knighting)

At Darkwell today, I became the 76th gentle in Caid to be rewarded with a Grant of Arms. Not a GoA included with an Order membership (like a Crescent); a bare Grant of Arms. This award is pretty rare in Caid (only 4 before me this century) so I'm really happy to have it. So I am now The Honorable Lord Cormac Mór. THL. Something I'm gonna have to get used to. :)

P.S. Oh, I'm also the first-ever Bard of Dun Or. I was a busy bear this weekend.

*giggles wildly* I thought a little study in Inter-Kingdom anthropology would spice up the morning...

I'll confess the Caidan version still sounds better to my ears at court, though.

Huzzah.

Yay! It was really cool that you were going on and on about how neat a simple GoA is and we got to blind side you! Heh heh. Congrats!

Yes, Your Majesty. And I think it's wonderful that you recognized Her Excellency Muiriath as well.

Quick question: my promissory is labeled "June 22." Was this the date you originally intended to give me the GoA?

Date: 2006-07-30 08:17 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kottr.livejournal.com
Uhhh.. No. It was made for July 22nd, but you left early from lyondemere anniversary. If you want a new one with better dates on it, let me know at the next event that we see you at. We'll get a new one made for you.

That's perfectly alright, Your Majesty. I wouldn't want to put you to all that trouble, when you've done so much for me already. So should I list "July 22" as the date for the award in the OP? Likewise, July 9 for True Thomas's Lux? (I think those were the only pre-dated scrolls; Muiriath's GoA, the AoA's, the Dolphins and the Harp were all dated for that court, right?) Or should they all be dated July 29th?

Date: 2006-07-30 08:55 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kottr.livejournal.com
I believe they should all be dated for July 29th. The only reason you would back date something is if the award was given while we were not there. Like for example when we went to Lilies War, we sent awards up to Nordwache Anniversary. One of the people was not there, so the B&B gave them the award about 2 weeks later. The original date is the correct one in that instance. In your instance the current date is the correct one, because that is when we gave it to you from our hand.

It's no trouble at all to get a new one made. It only takes a few minutes to scribe them up. Just let us know.

Muriath was well deserving as well. I really like the blank GoA, it just has a nice feel to it.

...and, it's still "Lord Cormac"...there is no special form of address for those who hold arms by grant versus by award.

From: [identity profile] jj-maccrimmon.livejournal.com
Uumm wrong. Grants of Arms come with the title of "The Honorable Lord or Lady" as it applies. They can also be addressed as "Your Lordship or Ladyship" again as it applies.

Well....it's customary in Caid, but there is nothing in the laws that backs it up. It's kind of an awkward title.

It used to be in the Society level guidance for heralds till very recently. Terms and titles of address. I know that there were some recent changes, but I've purposely avoided much of that tar ball.

For Caid, John James is correct. Here, we attach "The Honourable" when GoA's (or, more commonly, when Order memberships that confer a GoA) are given. Is it different in your area, Herveus?

Corpora says:

VIII. PERSONAL AWARDS

D. Titles

...

2. The Society’s standard titles are defined in (4) below. The Society recognizes that equivalent titles from other cultures may be more appropriate for individual members. Such alternate titles may be used by those entitled to the rank or award associated with them, provided the College of Arms has ruled that the title in question is an equivalent for the rank or award in question. All standard and alternate titles are specific to the Society, and convey no rank or precedence outside it. They may be used in a Society context only by those who have achieved the appropriate rank or award within the Society.

...

4. The titles listed here are considered standard, and may be used by those who have earned or been granted the appropriate rank or award within the Society. The College of Arms publishes a more extensive list of titles and alternative forms, which may also be used freely by qualified persons. In addition, the College of Arms has full approval authority over new alternative titles, which must be added to their list before being released for use in the Society.

TITLE (masculine/feminine/collective): RANK OR AWARD

...

Lord/Lady Basic titles for persons who hold Arms by Award
or Grant.

---end of Corpora extract

Note that Lord/Lady are the basic titles for Award and Grant. No distinction between the two is made here. If you examine the full list, you will find no reference to "The Honorable...", or the other facets of the distinct styles and forms of address used in many places. The fact remains that those forms have no basis in the "rules of the game". Further, no one has offered evidence that those styles or forms of address are appropriate for pre 17th century recreation, so they don't even have the "but it's period" card to play, particularly in the context of a distinction between bearing arms by Award versus Grant -- something that is complete invention of the SCA way back in the early days.

I'm not trying to rain on Cormac's accomplishment. It's a wonderful thing; I'm just pointing out something that is (in my experience) not well enough known.

It's not been the general custom here in Atlantia, but some Crowns and other folks have tried to inveigle it into use.
