That's "Your Lordship" Cormac Mor!
Jul. 29th, 2006 09:17 pmAt Darkwell today, I became the 76th gentle in Caid to be rewarded with a Grant of Arms. Not a GoA included with an Order membership (like a Crescent); a bare Grant of Arms. This award is pretty rare in Caid (only 4 before me this century) so I'm really happy to have it. So I am now The Honorable Lord Cormac Mór. THL. Something I'm gonna have to get used to. :)
P.S. Oh, I'm also the first-ever Bard of Dun Or. I was a busy bear this weekend.

Date: 2006-07-30 07:57 pm (UTC)Quick question: my promissory is labeled "June 22." Was this the date you originally intended to give me the GoA?

Date: 2006-07-30 11:07 pm (UTC)...and, it's still "Lord Cormac"...there is no special form of address for those who hold arms by grant versus by award.

D. Titles

2. The Society’s standard titles are defined in (4) below. The Society recognizes that equivalent titles from other cultures may be more appropriate for individual members. Such alternate titles may be used by those entitled to the rank or award associated with them, provided the College of Arms has ruled that the title in question is an equivalent for the rank or award in question. All standard and alternate titles are specific to the Society, and convey no rank or precedence outside it. They may be used in a Society context only by those who have achieved the appropriate rank or award within the Society.

4. The titles listed here are considered standard, and may be used by those who have earned or been granted the appropriate rank or award within the Society. The College of Arms publishes a more extensive list of titles and alternative forms, which may also be used freely by qualified persons. In addition, the College of Arms has full approval authority over new alternative titles, which must be added to their list before being released for use in the Society.
TITLE (masculine/feminine/collective): RANK OR AWARD

Lord/Lady Basic titles for persons who hold Arms by Award
or Grant.
---end of Corpora extract
Note that Lord/Lady are the basic titles for Award and Grant. No distinction between the two is made here. If you examine the full list, you will find no reference to "The Honorable...", or the other facets of the distinct styles and forms of address used in many places. The fact remains that those forms have no basis in the "rules of the game". Further, no one has offered evidence that those styles or forms of address are appropriate for pre 17th century recreation, so they don't even have the "but it's period" card to play, particularly in the context of a distinction between bearing arms by Award versus Grant -- something that is complete invention of the SCA way back in the early days.
I'm not trying to rain on Cormac's accomplishment. It's a wonderful thing; I'm just pointing out something that is (in my experience) not well enough known.
It's not been the general custom here in Atlantia, but some Crowns and other folks have tried to inveigle it into use.
