Hey all you artists! Hey all you Google Image searchers! I've got a challenge for you!

I need a line drawing of a bear head in profile for a heraldry submission I'm doing. I'm looking for the most natural bear head I can find, that still has the requirements for the submission.

Requirements:

- The bear's head MUST be in profile. No 3/4 turn, no face-on. It has to be completely in profile, 90 degrees from face-on.

- The bear MUST have "dangly bits" coming from the neck. The term in heraldry is "erased" and looks like someone grabbed the bear by the neck and pulled it from its body (i.e. there's no straight line cut where the body disappears.

- The drawing MUST be a line drawing, like one would find in a coloring book.

Here's an example of what I'm looking for, though I'd like something a bit fiercer/more natural/not quite so dim-looking:

Doesn't he look sad and idiotic? Help me out, people!

Other crappy examples:
http://www.heraldicclipart.com/catalog/bear-head-erased.bmp
http://www.badger.cx/heraldry/roll/arms/TorricinnBjorn.gif (this is a bit less stupid-looking, but still not what I'm looking for)

Oh, and no muzzles please: http://www.heraldicclipart.com/catalog/bear%20head%20erased%20and%20muzzled.GIF I'm not that kinky.

So pull out your sketch pads and your browser prompts. Prize for the best art recieved will be a new linen tunic sewn by mine own hand!

Edit: This or this is what I'm looking for. Of course, both are photos and not line drawings, and the first one (my new OMG favorite) isn't completely in profile, but now you artists have got an idea of what I want.

Obviously you have been through Google Images already.

I must respectfully disagree about the "crappiness" of the examples. They are decent examples of historical style. Possibly not actual Medieval style, mind you. I do like Torricin Bjorn's piccie though.

I'm thinking that [profile] snowbahr may be the one who can help you the best. She collects bear pictures and is a mighty fine hand with the photoshop. Maybe she can take a naturalistic picture of a bear and add the "erasing" to produce the effect you require.

Ya. Her. Ursula. Cormac knew who I meant anyway.

Nobody likes my drawing or I'd give it a whack myself.

Yup. I just wanted to make sure he was lookin' in the right place. I didn't know if he knew her...

Ditto. It's why I'm a court herald...

The pictures most of the clipart out there uses are from A.C. Fox-Davies, the first image included. While Fox-Davies, an English herald, did proper justice to the majestic, ferocious lion, and most of the other popular English heraldic beasties, for some reason he didn't do the noble bear the same justice. Look at the first picture; no focus to the eyes, tongue completely filling the mouth. The bear looks like he's had a lobotomy. Fox-Davies' lions don't look like they've had lobotomies. So I'm looking for artwork that isn't Fox-Davies or derived from the same, because I'm certain I've seen great bear heads out there somewhere.

They look thirsty with their tongues all hanging out.

Yeah, one of the silly heraldic conventions. Every animal must have their mouth open, and their tongue sticking out twice as long as their head. That makes aesthetic and scientific sense...right?

Hmm. Well, I think probably I need to print it out and do some cleanup/details, then re-scan, but is this the right track for you? (want a tongue, btw?)

huh... wow, was there a deadline for this project? I might give it a whack... though whether my pic turns out good or not, I'd still have to upload it onto the net at Rusty's house... so it might take a little time.
either way, happy bear hunting! I'm at the Library right now so I guess I'll check out a few bear books
;)

It's a little more naturalistic than the historic examples.

I don't know your email address, so here's what I could come up with via crappy phonecam pic.

I got up extra-early so I could con my housemate into taking this picture. ;P

So please excuse the fact that it sucks.

Yeah. Pretty out of focus, but you get the general idea.

Also, I wasn't sure if you wanted a really long tongue like that, but I can get rid of it and work something else in if it's the only part you truly hate.

I am still so, so annoyed at the lack of scanner cable, though.

Hope I wasn't interrupting anything *really* improtant last night.
