I've just put a $5,000 good-faith deposit on an offer I'm making on a 2-bedroom 1-1/2-bathroom condo 3 blocks from where I work. More details to follow...

Congratulations!

That is fantastic!

When you're not too busy I have yet another stupid heraldic type question for you.

I'm in the process of designing a 'marshals tabard', but a quite nice one, not just a front-and-back slopover thing (it will have more the shape of a surcoat with the marshals' badge on the front and back).

Firstly, can you point me in the direction of something like line art for the marshals badge? It would be most useful if it were scaleable (I need to take this to Kinko's on a floppy and have them print it for me about 18"x18", and they're tired of me bringing in physical clip art and just having them enlarge it until it is what I want).

Secondly, are there any rules you are aware of as to what sort of a border I can use (in yellow, around the black garment on which the yellow badge will be appliqued) or more importantly, that I may NOT use? I'd like to spruce it up a bit more than just the applique on black overall, but lord knows I don't want to offend anyone.

As always, thank you VERY much for the help.

At this link you can find an svg file of crossed swords. This is vector art that is easily scalable. This isn't by any means a "standard" sword design, just the only appropriate one I had that was vector-ready.

As for the embellishment, my rule of thumb has always been this: If someone looks at whatever you've come up with, and can easily discern the difference between the heraldic parts (big, bold, butch) and the decorative elements (dainty or all-but-invisible across a field), then you've done it right. If you want to put gold piping around the edge of the surcoat, this would be decorative. If you wanted to put a 2" border around the edge of the surcoat, that would be an heraldic element, and would make people unhappy. Likewise, if you wanted to decorate the hilts of the swords with stones, baubles, etc., or make the black background out of a patterned damask rather than a boring, flat broadcloth, that would be decorative. If, however, you wanted to make the grip of the hilt red instead of gold, or powder the black field with white crescents, that would be an heraldic element, and would make people unhappy.

This sounds like a cool project, and I look forward to seeing it!

I wasn't able to open the graphic file (which is probably a failure of my computer, not your file - I'll try it on our office one tomorrow)...but I have a question.

You've probably guessed this is not for me (and not for a Caiden, though it may visit here from time to time), and in AE it is common for heraldic tabards to have a yellow border. I realise that isn't part of the badge, but it is local custom, at least there (to be honest I've never paid attention anywhere else, it's been years since I was at any war other than Pennsic).

The intent was indeed to have a wide yellow border at the (calf-length) hem and on the (forearm-length) sleeves, with the entire garment lined in yellow as well (it will be worn over a red and yellow gambeson and if he gets dye from the black linen on that gamebeson he'll have to deal with me, who spent upwards of 60 hours quilting and appliquing the gambeson).

I'm not sure I see what the difference would be as to whether he went out on the field in his black and yellow (such as described above) surcoat with a black tabard (of the ordinary type) over it, as opposed to just having the badge sewn onto the garment itself. From ten feet away you aren't going to be able to tell unless there's a stiff wind (same bolt of black linen)....this way I'm not adding another two layers to what he's wearing on the field in August heat.

Thoughts?

And in like manner:

Would the use of this trim also seem offensive to you?

http://www.calontirtrim.com/cgi-bin/dqryPublicOneTrimName.asp?[RequestTrim]=Marshal

What if said trim is used between the yellow border and the black garment?

My intent is to not offend, but I see this as a lot like the restriction on white belts, where more than once I've seen knights offended by a white rope belt on a period monastic robe, or a white stripe falling anywhere from waist to knee on a tunic...taking the 'white belt' issue way too far (which is one reason my stainlesss steel maille belt has copper wire 'decorations'...it's not plain though you may have to come up and look at the work (the diaper pattern from the front of the Doge's Palace in Venice) to really see it).

The use of that trim wouldn't offend me (though I wouldn't tell Justina). In fact, it further emphasizes the intent of the garment, which can only be a good thing.

Your concerns are completely understandable, given certain members of the chivalry's touchiness about belts, baldrics and chains, but I don't think marshals will take offense to the same degree that knights do, particularly if the person wearing it is a marshal. If, however, the person isn't a marshal, he or she might get some flak.

LOL!! He's always asking me whether we're wearing trim from Justina whenver we work for her, but she's really not bothered, though she would know where that came from.

And you make a good point...I would not consider making this for anyone who was not a marshal, but Finar has been one for longer than I've been in the SCA.

I *think* I understand what you're saying, though of course photos of current AEthelmearcan tabards with the band wouldn't hurt my understanding. If this is truly a non-tabard, but in fact a proper, sewn-sided garment like a tunic, then the wide gold hem and trimmed sleeves is no real problem. At that point, your heraldic display would be from shoulder to shoulder, neck to waistline, and you'd have your swords fit within that space (alternately, you could place the crossed swords over the left breast, a la Garter cloaks).

Alas, I have no photos of current AE tabards...we don't normally carry a camera at Pennsic, but this year Finar did, so as to compile for me a visual tour of friends and favorite places...but he left it over at Justina's when he was on the battlefield (wisely, for the camera's sake).

But yes, the garment is as you describe it above (better than I did)...a fully finished tunic with full sleeves and a walking slit front and back, and fully sewn sides...and yes, I'm aiming to place the heraldic display just as you describe. I'm still debating the trim...it might be a bit much.

You'll likely get to see this at GWW (where I plan to have it as a surprise for Finar)...we'll be camped with Justina.

Thank you AGAIN for all the help, and how exciting about the condo!

Congratulations and good luck!!!!

And if I ever give any advice to anyone looking at buying property it is this: DO the home inspection. Yeah, it's 99% certain you will.. but have the freaking place inspected by an expert, who isn't the seller's cousin or something. :)

That's all... good luck and crossing various parts of my body for you!

WE have the most wonderful realtors working with us on this.

We are going to be asking a gentleman that she says drives her crazy but apparently he is really good at finding things.

I'm already pulling the permits file and the built as it is plans from Pasadena City planning and building. I'm a fair witness I am, and I don't take for granted that any horse has four legs.
